TYPES OF INDIAN OUTFITS

Indian Wedding outfits are incredibly fun to wear and filled with bright colors that will make you feel like you’re attending a red carpet affair. Following is a guide to some of the most common Indian dresses:

WHAT IS A LEHENGA?

A Lehenga (pronounced leng-ah) is the most popular outfit and is typically comprises of 3 pieces:
   - Skirt (lehenga)
   - Cropped blouse (choli)
   - Scarf (dupatta)
The lehenga has a similar look to a Saree because of the draped fabric but is much easier to wear and comfortable to dance in.
Lehengas, depending on their heaviness of embellishments and embroidery can be worn mostly at all wedding occasions - engagements, mehendis and sangeets (lighter embroidery lehengas) or weddings and receptions (heavier embroidery lehengas). These days you can also find some contemporary lehengas with capes and jackets.

A Kurta (pronounced kur-tah) & Sharara (pronounced sh-rara) set is a 3-piece outfit:
   - Pants (slim, straight or flared)
   - Blouse (varying in length)
   - Dupatta or vest
The biggest difference between a Kurta and Sharara is pant style. Kurtas either have narrow (churidaar) or straight pant style where as Shararas have typically wide-legged, flowy pants. The Sharara outfit is a fun and playful option. It is best for a Sangeet, Mehndi, or Wedding event.

WHAT IS A SAREE?

A saree (pronounced sah-ree) is the most traditional Indian garment. It is a 6-yard long piece of cloth, which is pleated, wrapped, and draped across the shoulder. It is worn with a cropped blouse and a petticoat skirt.
The saree comes in a one size fits all and has many different ways to drape depending on its region of origin. The draping of a saree sometimes gets challenging, so you can also get semi-stitched sarees which can be worn directly without the whole process of draping.
A traditional saree is typically worn for the wedding ceremonies, but you can also wear a contemporary saree for the reception for a glam look.
